Here is an embroidered picture of sailing dinghies close to shore with a windmill and small cottages on the shoreline. The embroidery is reminiscent of those done by sailors and has held its colours amazingly well. In fact there seems to be no fading whatsoever. Click on photo for enlargement.

I think the beech frame was probably varnished or lacquered originally, as there are a few traces remaining. (Further photo to follow) There are a few specks behind the glass which could do with being removed but the embroidery itself is in excellent, unmarked condition.

The last of this group of watercolours, this time back to Northamptonshire and a view of Billing Mill on the River Nene. Again dated 1885, this is another watercolour that appears to be in its original condition with no fading of the colours. It is in an identical, but better condition, frame to WP-10 with no mount. For lovers of Northamptonshire countryside, mills or water this painting could look stunning with the right mount and frame.

I would suggest taking delivery of this lovely watercolour minus the frame.

Another watercolour by the same, unnamed, artist, this time of Sonning Weir. Sonning weir and lock is situated on the River Thames at the village of Sonning near Reading in Berkshire. This watercolour is dated August 1885 on the reverse and measures approximately 15” x 11”. There is no obvious fading of the colours. Click on photos to enlarge.

The frame is 1960s era, cream and silver plastic-coated wood in not particularly good condition. There is no mount and I would suggest once again that the painting would benefit from reframing and would therefore be better sent out of its current frame. This is, of course, entirely up to the purchaser.

A watercolour presumed to be by the same artist as WP-08, this one of a group of pine trees, location unknown. The initials MEN and a date of 1885 are written in the bottom right corner of the painting and on the reverse. The size of the frame is 9” x 12” and I estimate that the watercolour itself is approximately 7½” x 10½”. Click on the photo to see an enlarged image.

The frame is a thin 1960s era cream painted. I would be happy to post with or without the frame but would suggest that to turn this duckling into a swan a new mount and frame would work wonders!

A watercolour dated 15/7/85 of Great Billing Church, Northampton. I recently acquired 4 paintings from the same source and from the dates on the other 3 it would appear that the year ’85 is in fact 1885. Knowing the Church (I was confirmed there in the 1960s) I have no reason to question the date. The colours are good and there looks to be no fading.

Click on the first photo to see an enlargement.

The painting is in a typical 1960s cream and gold frame measuring aproximately 5¾” x 8” but can easily be removed if preferred.

A stapled booklet of twenty-three pages of illustrations which give a general picture of the embroidery which was being produced in Sweden at the time. In rubbed condition, with the centre page loose from the staples. An interesting source book, nevertheless.
